He is very active and never sits still.Joseph was referred to The Manchester Youth Zone in Harpurhey, by the local authority’s “Early Help” service. At the time he was in danger of receiving an ASBO after numerous exclusions from schools; tenancy warnings from the local Housing Association, and a number of incidents with the police (including setting off a firework in a takeaway with the aim of setting fire to the building). His attitude at home -to all family members but particularly his mother- was described as “appalling” and had led to anxiety issues for his older brother. The Youth Zone offer a 10 week programme targeted at young people who display concerning behaviour and who are identified as being at risk of Child Criminal Exploitation. As part of the programme, Joseph attended a one week residential. This provided Joseph with new and challenging experiences – and an opportunity to get away from the gang culture that he had fallen into in Harpurhey. Afterwards he said that it had “… made me think about things more.”By the end of the course Joseph was a changed person. His anti-social behaviour ceased, he started attending school on a regular basis and his mother reported that he was “like a different boy” at home. Shortly afterwards the local authority’s Early Help service felt confident enough to withdraw support.Joseph still attends Manchester Youth Zone three nights a week and is now a positive role model for other young people. He still speaks sometimes with his old friends but he now has the confidence and resilience to make his own decisions.
