Frank Case Studies – Recent Post Widget Case Studies Jason and Ismael Callum Michaela Kiya Humayra Frank Summer Joseph Frank Frank has learning difficulties and also suffers from other health problems. Working with Frank has not always been easy for the staff at Myplace Middlesbrough as he has anger management issues. Poor behaviour can be triggered by very small incidents and can sometimes result in angry outbursts. Frank joined Middlesbrough Myplace’s mixed ability group a little over 18 months ago when he was 18. This group meets every week to enjoy the centre’s youth club facilities (table tennis, pool etc.) and to participate in arts and crafts and music events organised by the centre’s staff. The group also receives support and advice from local partners on issues such as internet safety and personal hygiene. In the autumn of each year the group starts to plan and manage a “Musical Christmas” event at the centre but initially Frank was unwilling to join with the other young people when they were performing together. However, with coaching and support from the centre’s staff, Frank began to engage and he started singing and rapping in front of the group for the first time. Performing publicly helped Frank to channel his emotions. He also found that the positive feedback which he received from his peers and from Myplace centre staff raised his self-esteem, and very quickly Frank’s behaviour started to improve. Six months later, Frank has performed regularly, including at Open Mic events arranged at his Myplace centre for the young people of Middlesbrough. During this time there have been no further incidents of bad behaviour – although he is sometimes reluctant to leave the building at the end of the mixed ability group’s regular, weekly sessions!
